There is a common misconception among some pet owners that dogs and cats cannot co-exist together within a house. While there are some breeds of dogs that do not naturally interact well with other pets most breeds of dogs can be socialized to interact appropriately with cats and live together in a house. The way that the two species are introduced to each other as well as the age of both the dog and cat are key. In addition the pets prior history with the other species really makes a difference as well.

Puppies and cats

If you are considering bringing home a new puppy and you currently have cats there are some steps that you can do to provide the best possible first meeting.

· Keep the puppy separate from the cats for the first few days.

· Allow the cats to smell the blankets that the puppy has slept on and vice versa.

· Hold the puppy and allow the cats to smell him or her without the puppy being able to move towards the cats. This is best done if the puppy is held securely on the floor or on a lap.

· Once they have had a chance to see each other when the puppy is under control consider allowing the puppy to walk around the room with the cats.

· The cats should not be held; rather they should be allowed to move away from the puppy when they want.

· If the puppy barks or attempts to chase the cats correct the puppy with a quick “No” and give them an appropriate toy to play with. Soon the puppy will realize that they are to chew on the toy, not try to chase the cats.

· Supervise all interactions between the cat and puppy until you are confident that they are well socialized. This may take several weeks depending on the comfort level of the cat and the size of the puppy.

Remember the younger this process starts the easier it will be. Keep in mind that some breeds are naturally more aggressive, particularly terriers and other hunting breeds such as Akitas, Dobermans, Rottweilers and hound varieties. Some of the smaller and toy dogs are also not well suited to interacting with cats, so research the breed and talk to current owners and breeders before you choose.

Dogs and cats

If you are considering a mature dog from a rescue or private home be sure to ask if they get along with cats. Most mature dogs that have been properly socialized with cats will get along with all cats after an initial “get to know each other” period. Often this is relatively short, lasting only a couple of days. Some mature dogs do very will with cats in the house but will immediately chase the same cat if they are outside. Carefully monitoring the dog and cat for the first few days is key for both safety and security for the cat and dog.

If you are not sure if the dog is socialized with cats assume that they are not, especially for large breeds of dogs or hunting type dogs including terriers. Keep the dog and the cat separate and only try to introduce them if the dog is on a very short leash and you have another adult there to work with the cat.

Often mature dogs will not interact well with cats but may develop an attitude of ignoring the cat. This may be acceptable but does not mean that the dog may not become aggressive towards the cat under certain conditions. Consider crate training or keeping your dog in a kennel or separate room when you are not able to supervise to prevent any fighting between the two species.

Most breeds of dogs do well with cats, especially when they are introduced slowly and at a young age. Proper socialization with other species will make your dog more accepting of all sorts of animals and will minimize their aggression towards others.

If I were to make a list of all the dog behaviors I love it would probably be quite long. A deliciously happy tail wag, a bow to solicit play, and a soft sigh before resting their head on your lap would surely make the list. But, those are just a few of the many reasons why dogs bring us immense joy every day. On the other hand, my list of dog behaviors that are not so favorable is rather short. For me, like most, one of the few things on that list would surely be coprophagia. Coprophagia is the consumption of feces. This can include the feces of others as well as their own.

Some species ingest the feces of their mother as a way of ingesting required bacteria in order to benefit from the nutrition of plants. Other species ingest their own feces as a possible source of vitamins. But, the question on the minds of many dog owners is “Why does my dog eat poop?” Considering how troublesome most pet parents find this doggie past time, it is a bit surprising that there has been relatively little research on the topic. Bitches will eat the feces of their young to keep the whelping are clean. For young puppies, eating feces is often simply a normal part of exploratory behavior. Coprophagia may also be the result of an intestinal infection, pancreatitis, or a malabsorption of nutrients (in which case the dog may feel chronically hungry and therefore eats the feces to fill up). Be sure to consult your veterinarian to rule out gastrointestinal and other possible medical issues.

If an underlying medical condition is not the cause, some other possible causes could be: Boredom, stress, hunger, the fact that feces may similar to regurgitated food, as a source of protein, as a way of ingesting and exuding a scent to mask their own (especially when they roll in feces!), a way of imitating the owner picking up feces, an attention seeking behavior (if picking up feces results in them being chased by their owner, in which case it becomes a game of keep away), or it could simply be a behavior that results from dogs' nature as a scavenger.

Eliminating coprophagia from your dog's behavioral repertoire is easy in theory, but for many people, not in practice. You have to be willing to focus time and energy on managing your dog so they are given as little opportunity as possible to practice this behavior. If you have a small dog who is pad trained, then you need to consider that allowing your dog to eliminate in private (i.e. on a pad when you aren't near) will have to cease, at least until the dog has had plenty of time to forgo the habit. If your dog is spending time unsupervised in a yard, then it means planning your day so you can be there to supervise yard play time and quickly clean up waste out of your dog's view before he or she can ingest it.

Your veterinarian may suggest a change of diet which may include canned food, a vegetable oil additive, and/or cooked or fresh vegetables. Some veterinarians may recommend adding one of the commercial food additives or meat tenderizer to make the feces taste bad. However, these are not consistently effective. I suspect with or without these additives, the feces doesn't taste particularly good, even to a dog. So, coprophagia is probably not due to the dog having a craving for the flavor of feces per se.

It seems the most effective plan is to schedule frequent leash walks, play and exercise time, and environmental enrichment in the home. Feeding your dog from food stuffable toys as a way of keeping them busy is a great option for this. Most importantly, avoid any sort of punishment for this behavior as it is likely to result in an owner absent outlet for this problem (i.e. the dog waits until you aren't there to punish them to eat the feces), other redirected behavior problems, and serious damage to the canine/human bond.

If Fido is really part of the family, then why have you left him out of your hurricane plan? Always have a plan that includes your pets whether they are dogs, cats, turtles or other animals. Your pets need you as much as you need them during a crisis.

It is important to have a plan in place in case you ever need to evacuate with your pet. You dog cannot remind you to bring his bed or to pack him medicine. That is all up to you, his loyal owner. So make yourself a list and keep it with the rest of your evacuation plan. Be sure to include everything that your pet will need.

One of the most important parts of your evacuation plan is to have a destination. Your best bet is always to stay with family or friends. But when that is not possible, turn to vets and shelters for advice. Deciding where to go isn't as easy when you are planning on taking your pet with you because there will always be places that will turn you away once they see your animal. Plan ahead by deciding the general area where you plan to go and calling the vet offices and animal shelters in that area. Those are the people that will be best suited to help find a location that accepts pets during disasters.

If you find a shelter that will allow you and your pet to stay together, make sure that you have read and understand all their rules ahead of time. Each will have their own set of rules and you need to understand them so that you and your pet will not be turned away at the last minute. Some will require that you register ahead of time so that they have an idea of how many pets and people to expect. Others will require specific cages or medical records to accompany your pet. Know what you need and have it ready ahead of time.

Regardless of where you take you pet, there are some basics that you will have to pack and take with. Your dog will need a crate to sleep in and be sheltered in. Unless your dog chews up stuff when it gets nervous, you should include a pillow or blanket for your pet to sleep on.

You will also need a collar and leash so that you can walk your pet when it needs to go potty. Name tags with phone numbers should also be attached to your pet's collar just in case it does manage to get away from you. Remember in a storm, you pet may panic and run off. Due to the storm, you pet may become disoriented and not be able to find you.

Bring your pet's bowls with your pet. Be sure that you bring at least a 2 week supply of bottled water for your dog and a 2 week supply of dog food. With all of the stress that your pet will already be under, you do not want to switch up its food and cause upset stomachs.

If your dog is on daily medicines or has medicines that it takes as needed, be sure to speak with your vet ahead of time and get enough to cover 1 month. Along with the medicines, you should also have a copy of all medical and shot records for your pet. Keep a picture of you and your pet together so that you can prove ownership of the dog. This should always be a part of your file you keep on your dog.

Your pet is like a child and will need something to do. Remember to bring a few toys for your pet to play with and chew on. You do not want them to get bored. In consideration of other people that may be staying around you, leave the noisy or squeaky toys at home.

Be prepared in case your pet does get injured in the disaster or at the shelter area. Pack a first aid kit and keep it with you and your pet at all times. This should include alcohol wipes, gauze wraps, medical tape, tweezers etc. You can buy a pre-assembled kit or talk to your vet about what they recommend.

Being the owner of 3 large dogs in Florida, I must have a plan in place to make sure that if a hurricane comes, my dogs will get to safety with my family. Not only do we have a dog first aid kit handy at all times, we also have a hurricane plan in case we have to evacuate with our furry friends.
Make sure your dogs always have ID on them. In times of emergencies, a tag can get lost. We use ink to dye our phone number on our dogs just in case they get lost and loose their tags. This dye can be used on all your furry pets, not just the dogs. We want all your pets to be safe. We care about all animals. We hope that you too will join us in helping animals in need. Give your pet a voice with a semi-permanent tattoo from http://www.pet-ink.com.

Dogs with seizures is related to a neurological condition that is basically the same as with people. Just like with people there are different types of seizures that can affect dogs. These include:

- Epilepsy – which means the seizures occur repeatedly over the course of the animals life

- Symptomatic epilepsy – this is a primary epilepsy that allows the veterinarian to see lesions and damage to the brain via radiographic technologies

- Idiopathic epilepsy – this form of the disease does not appear to cause any brain damage even if there are several seizures

- Cluster seizures – this is where the dog has more than one seizure in a 24 hour period

- Status epilepsy – this is a more severe case where the seizure activity is constant or the brain never comes out of the seizure completely

If the dog has repeated seizures there is more likelihood of brain damage occurring. Most dogs with seizures are genetically predisposed, meaning if their parents had a form of epilepsy, they are more prone to develop symptoms as well.

Causes for Dog Seizures

If at all possible, locating the cause of the seizures is explored, because when the veterinarian knows the cause, they can treat your dog accordingly. Some seizures are caused by low blood sugar levels is very common in toy breeds. Another cause can be low calcium levels as well as dogs with liver disease. When the cause is understood, it makes treating the disorder more effective.

Treatment Options

There are several different routes to treating dog seizures, but if at all possible finding the cause of the seizure should first be explored. If the cause is identified, the treatment begins there. For instance, if the dog has low blood sugar levels, getting this corrected will cause the seizures to cease. If there is no underlying cause or it cannot be identified, most dogs are placed on medications specifically for controlling the seizures and preventing them from happening.

Dogs with seizures can live a normal lifespan, if the condition is caught early and there is a simple underlying cause. Those dogs that have a causation cannot be found, tend to not live as long because they eventually have brain damage from continued seizures.

Many dogs with continued seizures for no apparent known cause become immune to the medications, in other words, they no longer respond to the treatment so the dosages have to be increased.

Final Thoughts

When your dog friend has seizures, it can be a very frightening experience to watch. If there is no underlying cause for the seizures, your dog can possibly have a seizure at any given time. Therefore, it is essential that someone is always with the dog in case of a seizure that does not end. These types of seizures need immediate medical intervention or brain damage will surely follow.
